Axes of excellence

In pursuit of medical excellence

Ranked among the 10 top mother-child hospital centres in the world, Sainte-Justine UHC is seeking to continue its mission of excellence at all levels, focusing on the following six fields of excellence.

Perinatal care

Perinatal care is the heart of Sainte-Justine’s mission, and covers all aspects of the mother and child’s health, from pregnancy to birth. The hospital is a leader in Canada in this area, in terms of both research and clinical practice.

Sainte-Justine is Québec’s premier centre for mothers with high-risk pregnancies and for premature babies, whose survival rate currently stands at 85 percent.

Within a few years, Sainte-Justine’s neonatal centre will have become the largest in North America, with 80 beds and a wealth of expertise under one roof.

Neurodevelopment

Neurodevelopment covers all brain conditions. Sainte-Justine attracts the world’s top experts in the field, who specialize in the functioning and development of the central and peripheral nervous systems. Neurogenetics, neuroimaging and neurobiology are some of Sainte-Justine’s key areas of expertise.

Hemato-immuno-oncology

A North American leader in this area, Sainte-Justine is the only hospital in Québec to perform all types of solid-organ transplants, and the only certified centre for pediatric bone-marrow transplants. It is also one of North America’s five most active pediatric centres in cord-blood transplants, which are showing great promise in the treatment of cancer.

Cardiac sciences

Sainte-Justine established Canada’s first pediatric cardiac transplant and fetal cardiology programs. The university hospital centre has played an important role in developing this innovative practice, and its Cardiac Sciences department enjoys international renown, reinforced by exchanges and knowledge-sharing among teams from here and abroad, as part of the “Sainte-Justine au cœur du monde” program.

Musculoskeletal disorders and movement science

Sainte-Justine’s team of orthopedists are active in research and clinical practice. Their expertise in correcting scoliosis with flexible corsets is world-renowned.

Among the research team’s achievements is the development of an inexpensive, non-invasive scoliosis screening test which will allow millions of children worldwide to be treated.

Health promotion

Accredited as a “Health Promoting Hospital” by the World Health Organization (WHO) in December 2007, Sainte-Justine UHC puts a lot of emphasis on preventing disease and promoting healthy lifestyles. The hospital runs public awareness and health promotion campaigns for patients, their families and employees across Québec.
